February 17, 1934 - July 9, 2021
Dorothy Ann Clark Theus, affectionately known as “Mama Dot”, peacefully transitioned to Heaven on Friday evening, July 9, 2021, at home after a lengthy illness. She was born February 17, 1934, in Jackson, TN, to Alvester and Genevia Robinson Clark. The eldest of four children, Dorothy excelled in academics and was a “Math Wiz”. She graduated in 1952 with honors from Merry High School of Jackson, TN. She later attended Lane College and graduated with the Class of 1956 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She began teaching in the Jackson City School System, where she served for 32 years in the 6th, 4th, and 3rd grades, and later, Chapter/Title 1 classes. She was passionate about her students, providing tutoring and encouragement to students who needed that “extra push” to succeed. She would often say, “I love seeing my students pull up.” She committed her life to the Lord at an early age, and joined Macedonia Baptist Church. She loved working in the church, where she met and married the love of her life, the Reverend Lawrence Edward Theus. She served as First Lady of Beech Spring Baptist Church and Greater Mercer Baptist Church. She continued to serve as a devoted member who taught Sunday School and supported her husband. They had one daughter, Sylvia Devonne Theus Akins. She had a very creative, artistic spirit which was shown in her sewing, embroidery, and drawing. She also loved watching sports and was an avid baseball fan of her beloved Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. Before her ill- ness, her other favorite pastime was meeting and talking with her neighbors as she walked through her neighborhood. She was a quiet spirit with a loud presence of grace and love. Family members preceding her in death are her husband, Rev. L.E. Theus, mother and father, Alvester and Genevia Clark, and brother, Sylvester Clark. She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted and loving daughter, Sylvia (Grady) Akins; loving sisters, Joyce Ann Clark Bowles and Edna Elizabeth Clark Robinson; grandchildren, Jeremy Edward Akins and Danielle Yvonne Akins; great-grandchildren, Tristan Gabriel Hobson and Mila Michelle Shaw; nieces, Cassandra Rowena Kee, Dionne Damita Kee, and Etoil Contella Bowles Brown; and nephews, Jihad Abdurakman James Everett Kee and Henry Wesley Bowles II; along with a host of loving cousins and grandnieces and nephews.
