Ms. Annie Reid Carter
April 3, 1924 - August 8, 2017
A TIME TO BE BORN Annie’s earthly journey began a blessed 93 years ago, April 3, 1924, in Jackson, Tennessee where she was born the second child to the late Jake and Carrie Reid. A TIME TO REJOICE “Annie,” as she was affectionately known realized the importance of education and attended the Jackson Public School System where she received the Adult Equivalent Certificate. She was united in holy matrimony to Harrell Carter Sr. and was blessed with ten loving children. Annie was an encourager, always giving spiritual and common-sense advice to her children, co-workers and neighbors. Annie was a motivator encouraging everyone to be all that they could be and believe in yourself. Annie shared all that she had and wanted the best for everyone. Her advice was always to let Jesus lead you and believe in yourself. Annie believed in family and showing support for each other. She was a loving, kind and gentle hearted person. As a result, Annie was honored and received the NAACP Legacy Award for her commitment and outstanding contributions in the community. The Mound City Community will forever cherish her hospitality to her neighbors, community and others. She lived by the mantra, “If I can help somebody as I pass along, If I can cheer somebody with a word or song, If I can do my duty as a Christian ought, then my living shall not be in vain.” A TIME OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH Annie lived and professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with the Mount Zion Baptist Church worshipping and serving under the leadership of the late Rev. B.E. Anderson and was often visited and prayed for by her loving Pastor, Rev. Curtis Mormon. She served in and out of season for over 60 years at Mount Zion. Annie loved for God, her family and those she met along life’s journey. She knew the importance of serving others and enjoyed serving in and out of the vineyard. Some of her most enjoyable moments were serving as an Usher with a radiant smile for all who entered Mount Zion Baptist Church, hearing and learning about God’s holy word in Sunday School, serving as a member of the Missionary Society, and supporting all ministries of the church. Most importantly, she was a quiet spirit fearfully and wonderfully made. A TIME OF FAITHFULNESS Proverbs tells us that “a woman, who feareth the Lord, shall be praised.” Thus, words cannot adequately capture the essence of her being. Annie possessed special gifts. She touched the lives of everyone around her through her beautiful smile, astounding energy, and magnitude of love to all people regardless of who they were. The spiritual insight she possessed enabled her to share words of hope in the darkest circumstances were results of her amazing strength and honor. A TIME OF PEACE The prayer in the lyrics of the song “Order My Steps” guided the well-lived life of Annie R. Carter. “Order my steps in your word dear Lord, lead me, guide me every day, send your anointing Father I pray, order my steps in your word, please order my steps in your word.” The memory of Annie R. Carter will forever be cherished and a spirit of thankfulness by her loving, devoted, and caring children.
