Mrs. Thelma Hennings Givens

Thelma Hennings Givens, known by many as "Blackie" or "Black Gal" was born on September 7, 1932, in Denmark, Tennessee to the late Marell H. Merriweather and late Johnny Maholmes. Thelma was raised by her mother Marell and her loving and devoted stepfather, the late K. C. Merriweather who instilled in her hard work and core/family values. She departed from her earthly home on September 27, 2022.Thelma received her education in the Madison County Education System in Denmark Tennessee where she enjoyed basketball. Early in life she professed a hope in Christ and was a member of Denmark Baptist Church. Later she joined Blairs Chapel C.M.E. Church, where she served as an usher for over 30 years. Thelma worked numerous jobs throughout her lifespan, many of which she would often speak about in her many sit-down conversations. Such jobs included Farming, Nursing Homes, Poultry Factory, Martha White Food, and Milan Arsenal Plant during the Vietnam War Era. There was no job that she could not conquer. Thelma was a woman that believed in raising her family, not only her family but anybody. Her house was where all the children in the community would come to play, eat and be at home. She was loving person, never hesitating to let you know what was on her mind. She would give to whomever needed anything. She was an excellent cook that would feed anyone who stopped by her kitchen. Having a house full of boys, if there was any food left in the pot, she would always say "everybody got full". She was married to Perry Givens, Sr. who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by four sons Larry Hennings, James Givens, Stanley Givens, Bruce Givens, and daughter Elaine Givens. Several sisters and brothers preceded her in death. Those left to cherish her loving memories are her children: Charles (Luretha) Hennings, Michael(Georgia) Hennings, Percy (Martha) Givens, Perry (Jennifer) Givens Jr., Ella Williams, K. C. (Regina) Givens and Caeaner Bartlett; eighteen grandchildren: Marcus, Tiketia, Felita, Latasha, Charles Jr, Larry Jr, Donald, Latorria, Ryan, Jarvis, Perry III, Karen, Maurice Lee, Jasmine, Greg and Latoya; twenty-three great-grandchildren; sisters: Geraldine Ellison, Rada Samuels; Lee Anna Merriweather, Mary Sykes (Robert), Bettye Merriweather, Lizzie (Norman) White, Linda (Odell) March and Patricia (Bob) Williams; sister-in-law: Carrie Givens and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. She had a loving and devoted caregiver, her granddaughter: Mrs. Tiketia (Keke) Currie.
