Mrs. Mattie B. Phelps Brashers

Mrs. Mattie Bell Phelps Brashers, was born September 27, 1938 to the late Floyd E Phelps and the late Isabella Edwards Phelps. She departed this life Thursday morning June 6, 2013 at 5:15 A.M., at Jackson General Hospital. She was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Caldwell. Mattie was a graduate of the historical Montgomery High School at Lexington, Tenn. in 1957. She was employed as a nurse at Western Mental Health Institute and retired after 33 years of service. Very early in life, she became a member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ. Later she moved to Bolivar, Tenn. and attended East Bolivar Church of Christ, which later became Tate Road and remained a faithful member until her health began to fail. She was known throughout the brotherhood as the "Hat Lady" because of the vast variety and styles of hats that she loved to wear. She valued her friendships and had the attitude to always lend a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on to those who wanted it. She loved to cook, eat, laugh, and listen to good singing, whoever it was, if they could sing. She was full of fellowship and guidance. She was quick to share what she had. She had a loving heart, but could get your attention real quick (Ask her children) She loved attending yard sales and going to auctions on Friday night and buying whatever for herself and others. Mattie was united in matrimony to James Brashers on February 28, 1965. Together, they were the proud parents of three sons and she was very protective of them. Weldon Phelps (Dianne) of Jackson,Tenn; Jeffrey Brashers of Bolivar, Tenn; Tony Brashers (Maggie) of Bolivar, Tenn. She leaves to cherish her memory: a husband of forty-eight years, James Brashers; a sister, Shirley Jones (Larry) of Jackson, Tn; three brothers; James Emerson Phelps of Buffalo, New York; Van Davis Caldwell (Audrey) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; Dennis Earl Caldwell of San Bernadino, California. A brother-in-Iaw, Four sisters-n-Iaw; Seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; Aunts, Nephews, Nieces, and a multitude of cousins and friends. Also two very close and special friends: Edna Ford and Sally Woods. A special great nephew, Kirvaris 'KV' Myrick, who was in her care for several of his young years. She was always concerned about him and wanted him to do well. He graduated high school that night and she made her eternal transition the next morning.
