Mrs. Janice McHaney Pirtle

Ms. Janice McHaney-Pirtle was born March 24, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio, the second oldest of eight children born to the union of Paul McHaney Sr and Gladys McHaney, both of whom proceeded her in death. Janice was baptized as a teenager at Oak Grove Church of Christ in Henderson, Tenn. After high school Janice attended Jackson State Community College and was a proud member of the historic first graduating class, majoring in General Sciences. Later, Janice rededicated her life to Christ. Janice worshipped and labored dutifully for over 40 years at the North Henderson Church of Christ teaching Sunday school, serving in the kitchen, vacation bible school, doing whatever she could, including driving the church bus loaded with ladies to various Ladies Days until her health no longer allowed her to. Her professional career spanned many years, beginning with her employment with the State of Tennessee at The Nat. T. Winston Developmental Center in Bolivar, TN where she worked as a speech therapist for over 20 years. Due to a merger, Janice transitioned to another position with the state of Tennessee at the Jackson Housing Authority, Jackson, TN until retirement in June of 2025. In McHaney fashion Janice embodied a strong work ethic. In addition to always working a full-time job, she had other ventures along the way. Janice sold insurance door to door, ran a janitorial cleaning service, and in later years had a partnership in a family food truck business. Janice felt there was nothing she could not do nor fix...you know, 'make it work' Janice married James Arthur Pirtle Jr. (deceased) in 1995. They shared a love of Christ and singing in Gospel Chorus groups around the state and country, attending worship services, gospel meetings, and numerous civic functions. They enjoyed a strong union of marriage until his passing in January 1999. As a strong believer in the unity and power of family legacy, Janice served as the leading planner and organizer of the Croom and McHaney Family Reunion. She believed in reuniting regularly to keep the family flame lit and the vision alive for generations to come. If a family event was being held; reunions, weddings, funeral, baby showers, graduations... if she was invited, you could count on her to attend, no matter where it was being held it was on her calendar to do her best to attend. She LOVED a good time and celebrations! Janice's warmth, selflessness and boisterous laughter touched countless lives. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, a kind word, encouragement, and wisdom. Her giving nature and caring spirit will be deeply missed. She found joy in helping others, and making people feel loved. Whatever she had, she gladly shared. And she did not shy away from sharing what was on her mind, whether with words or that fierce eye contact. Janice was faith and family-oriented, with a special soft spot and patience for children. Janice was preceded in death by her parents: Paul McHaney and Gladys McHaney and two brothers; Paul McHaney Jr and Broderick McHaney. During the early morning hours of May 11, 2026, God called Janice McHaney-Pirtle to come home. In doing so, Janice is survived by her loving family; son, Heyward Alan (Sonja) Carter, grandsons Roman Sanders, Evan Carter, and Avery Carter. Her son of the heart, Ray L. Davis; his children: Braylen Arnold, Johnathan Linney, Anisse Linney, Caliyah Arnold, all who knew and loved her as Grandma. Siblings: Paula (Terry) Hollingsworth, Greta McHaney-Trice, Frederick (Janice-deceased) McHaney, Quinton (Nancy-deceased) McHaney, Phalatha McHaney-Conner, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, and numerous friends.
