Mrs. Essie Mae Moffitt

Essie Mae was born October 22, 1947 in Lexington, Tennessee, to her parents, the late Nathaniel and Martha Smith. She was the seventh child born in the family. She was raised with three brothers and seven sisters. After many years of struggles with her health, Essie Mae Moffitt transitioned to her heavenly home on August 22, 2014 with a host of family and friends to cherish her legacy of giving and caring unconditionally. She will be truly missed, but always remembered as a wife, sister, and aunt with a fiery spirit and genuine love for family, friends and the community. Essie Mae also known as "Cook" graduated from Montgomery High School in 1966. She began working at Brown Shoe Company on July 20, 1966 in the prefitting department, and after 29 years of service, she retired. She was known by her family for much of her life as the "rich sister and aunt", who always made production at Brown Shoe. For many years she was an active member of "The Friendship Club", where she served faithfully as the treasurer. Essie spent quality time with her family as she loved them so much. Essie Mae was united in Holy Matrimony to Willie Ray Moffitt on September 4, 1993. She was a god mother, and honorary grandmother. As well as, a great babysitter, caregiver and wonderful aunt to all her nieces and nephews. Essie Mae always gave the best Christmas gifts, leaving no child out of her giving. She leaves a very special void that can never be filled. Essie Mae is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Walter R. Smith; mother-in-law, Ramell Moffitt. Essie Mae leaves to cherish her wonderful and sweet memories, her loving husband of 20 years, Willie Ray Moffitt, two godchildren, Kim (Neal) Bumpass and Emily (Devon) Johnson, both of Lexington, TN; five honorary grandchildren, Anayah, Arianna, Isaiah and Alisha Pettigrew of Three Way, TN and Erica (Kendrick) Coleman of Jackson, TN; two brothers, Raymond Smith of Denver, CO and Ralph Smith of North Carolina; seven sisters, Rosetta (McDonald) Craig of Linden, TN, Kathaleen Swift of Lexington, TN, Josephine Harmon of Denver, CO, Vivian Hart of Widersville, TN, Lois Delk of Denver, CO, Gail (Charles) Hopewell and Alice (Terry) Butler of Lexington, TN; eleven sister-in-laws, four brother-in-laws. She also leaves a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and a longtime special friend, Nelie Kizer.
