Mr. Emmett Lloyd Guess

Emmett Lloyd Guess was born on April 25, 1937, in Galloway, Arkansas, to the late Fred and Inella McFarland Guess. He was one of nine siblings, all of whom preceded him in death: brothers Lonnie, McHenry, Fred, Charles, and Anderson, and sisters Lorraine "Dollie," Evelyn, and Katie. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Guess, and his daughter, Donna Burns. Emmett attended Scipio A. Jones High School in North Little Rock, Arkansas, where he excelled in athletics and earned All-American honors in football. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a helicopter mechanic. After completing his military service, he made his home in Maryland. Over the years, Emmett built a meaningful and dedicated career. He worked as a forensic nurse and retired after 30 years of service at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C. In addition, he spent several years as a cab driver in the D.C. area. He also gave back to his community as the Director of Athletics for the Boys & Girls Club in Glenarden-Ardmore, Maryland, where he coached both baseball and football. In his leisure time, he found great joy in fishing, especially on his boat in the Chesapeake Bay. In 2006, Emmett met and married the love of his life, Bobbie Charlene, September 17, 2006. They made their home in Maryland several years before relocating to Jackson, Tennessee in 2009. Together, they made a home, shared a love for the outdoors and enjoyed gardening side by side. A man of deep faith, Emmett was a devoted member of the 13th Street Church of Christ in Washington, D.C., where he faithfully served as a Deacon and Treasurer for 28 years. He took great pride in maintaining the church building and grounds. After relocating to Jackson, Tennessee, he became a dedicated member of East Jackson Church of Christ, where he continued his service as a faithful member and assisted with communion. Emmett leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Bobbie Charlene Guess; his son, Michael D. Guess of Maryland; his granddaughters, Chasity Wilson of New York and Marketta Vernon of Maryland; and his grandson, Michael L. Guess of Maryland. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Van (Diane) Dodson of Chandler, Arizona; Barbara (George) Steele, Perry Dodson, Sharon Dodson, and Jackie (Valerie) Dodson, all of Jackson, Tennessee. He is further survived by his sisters-in-law: Ruth Guess and Marie Guess of North Carolina; Corene Steele of Jackson, Tennessee; Lucy Strong of Drummonds, Tennessee; and Drue Burton of Los Angeles, California. In addition, he leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones. Among those who held a special place in his heart is his special granddaughter, Menshai "Shay Lynn" Wade.
